Picasso Owls: Ceramics and Works on Paper
The owl is a recurring subject in Picasso’s art, appearing in ceramic pitchers, sculptural vases, plates and works on paper. Titles such as Chouette and Hibou both refer to owls, but they can describe different designs, materials and editions.
Picasso’s owls form a subject group rather than one numbered suite. A small owl pitcher, a larger Madoura vase and an owl lithograph each require different catalogue references and a separate evaluation.

These examples show several documented owl designs. We also review other Picasso owl compositions and variants.

Picasso Owl Models and Edition References
| Work | Catalogue reference | Edition size |
|---|---|---|
| Petite Chouette, 1949 | A.R. 82 | 200 |
| Chouette aux Taches, 1951 | A.R. 120 | 300 |
| Chouetton, 1952 | A.R. 135 | 500 |
| Wood Owl, 1968 | A.R. 543 | 500 |
| Chouette, 1969 | A.R. 605 | 500 |
| Hibou au Crayon, 1947 | Bloch 412; Mourlot 57 | 50 |
These references identify specific designs, not every owl with a similar title. The A.R. number refers to Alain Ramié’s catalogue of Picasso’s edited ceramics; it is different from the individual edition number marked on a piece. Proofs and documented variants require separate checking.
Materials, dimensions and production
Madoura owl ceramics were made in earthenware, with painted slips, engraving and glaze varying by model. Record height, width and depth; sizes differ substantially. Owl lithographs require separate image and sheet measurements. A ceramic’s conception date identifies the design and may differ from its production date.
How to Identify Your Picasso Owl
Ceramic owls: examine the model and underside
Photograph the front, sides, back and base. We compare the form, decoration, dimensions and markings with the relevant A.R. entry. Marks may include Madoura Plein Feu, Edition Picasso or d’Après Picasso, depending on the model.
An authorized Madoura edition does not mean every example was personally painted by Picasso. A pottery stamp or inscription is also different from an individually applied artist’s signature. Markings must be assessed alongside the whole ceramic.
Owl lithographs: check the exact composition
Hibou au Crayon, 1947, is a lithograph catalogued as Bloch 412 and Mourlot 57, with a numbered edition of 50. Despite its title, it is not an original crayon drawing. Matching the image alone cannot distinguish an original lithograph from a later reproduction.

How Much Is My Picasso Owl Worth?
Value depends on the exact model or composition, edition, condition and provenance. For ceramics, disclose chips, cracks and repairs; for works on paper, include photographs of the margins and any discoloration. See our Picasso value guide or request an individual evaluation.
How to Sell Your Picasso Owl
- Send photographs and measurements. Include the base and markings of a ceramic, or the front, accessible reverse and signature of a work on paper. Add invoices or earlier descriptions if available.
- Receive a gallery review. We research the model or composition, catalogue references, edition and ownership records, then explain whether further examination is needed.
- Discuss a potential direct purchase. If the artwork fits our current acquisitions, we can discuss an offer and arrangements for completing the sale.
You do not need a catalogue number to begin. Leave framed artworks in place for initial photographs and avoid cleaning or repairing a ceramic before its condition has been reviewed.
Picasso Owl FAQs
Does “d’Après Picasso” mean my ceramic is a copy?
That marking can appear on authorized Madoura editions. Its wording alone does not establish authenticity or make the piece a later decorative copy. The form, decoration and other markings must match the documented model.
Are all Picasso owls part of the same edition?
No. Similar titles can refer to different ceramic models or works on paper. Each design has its own catalogue information and edition history.
Can I submit an owl with a chip or restoration?
Yes. Include clear photographs and any repair reports. Condition affects the evaluation, but damage does not automatically prevent us from considering the artwork.
Do I need a certificate before contacting you?
No. Send photographs and whatever documentation you have. An invoice, old gallery label or earlier catalogue description can help us begin researching the piece.
