Picasso’s Portraits of Jacqueline Roque

Jacqueline Roque, Picasso’s second wife, became a central subject in his later work. They met in 1953 and married in 1961. Her portraits range from profiles and figures at an easel to bold, overlapping facial features and elaborate hats.

“Jacqueline” describes a subject across different media, not one fixed suite or edition. Some portraits use titles such as Tête de Femme (Head of a Woman). Identifying the composition and its documented subject is more reliable than searching the name alone.

These examples include linocuts and Madoura ceramics. We also review other documented Jacqueline portraits.

Linocut editions and working states

Jacqueline au Chapeau Noir is catalogued as Bloch 1028 and Baer 1311; Jacqueline au Bandeau de Face is Bloch 1069 and Baer 1303. Both have numbered editions of 50, with proofs considered separately. A first-state proof, color trial and final published impression should not be treated as interchangeable.

Ceramic portraits and Madoura markings

Profil de Jacqueline, A.R. 383, and Jacqueline au Chevalet, A.R. 333, are separate ceramic designs. Photograph the reverse, where stamps and edition markings may appear. An authorized Madoura edition does not mean every example was individually painted by Picasso.

Paper, dimensions and production

Many Jacqueline linocuts were printed by Hidalgo Arnéra on Arches paper; specifications vary by composition and state. Measure the image and full sheet separately. For ceramics, record diameter or height, width and depth. The design date may differ from the publication or production date.

A signature printed within the image is different from a separately applied pencil signature. Later reproductions can repeat the same portrait and date, so the image, materials, dimensions and documentation must be assessed together.

How Much Is My Picasso Jacqueline Artwork Worth?

The exact composition, medium, edition or state, signature, condition and provenance determine the comparison. A painting, numbered linocut and ceramic portrait require separate evaluations. See our Picasso value guide or send photographs for an individual review.

How to Sell Your Picasso Jacqueline Artwork

  1. Send photographs. Include the front, accessible reverse, signature, edition markings and labels. For ceramics, add the base and sides. Include measurements and any invoices or previous descriptions.
  2. Receive a gallery review. We research the composition, medium, catalogue references and supporting records, then explain whether further examination is needed.
  3. Discuss a potential purchase. If the artwork fits our current acquisitions, we can discuss an offer and practical arrangements for completing the sale.

You do not need to know the exact title before contacting us. Leave framed works in place for initial photographs and disclose any known damage or restoration.

Picasso Jacqueline FAQs

Is Jacqueline one Picasso series?

It is a recurring subject across paintings, drawings, graphic editions and ceramics. There is no single edition size or catalogue number covering all Jacqueline portraits.

Can a work titled “Head of a Woman” depict Jacqueline?

Yes. Some documented portraits use that title. However, not every female portrait represents Jacqueline; the specific composition and catalogue records need checking.

Does an artist’s proof automatically have a higher value?

No. The composition, state, printing quality, condition and documentation matter. A proof designation alone does not establish a higher value.

Can I submit a work without a certificate?

Yes. Send photographs and whatever records you have. An invoice, gallery label or earlier catalogue description can help us begin the research.
