Picasso’s Vollard Suite: 100 Compositions, 1930–1937
The Vollard Suite brings together 100 compositions created by Pablo Picasso between 1930 and 1937. Named for the dealer and publisher Ambroise Vollard, it includes sculptors and models, classical figures, the Minotaur and three portraits of Vollard. The suite is catalogued as Bloch 134–233.
Although often described collectively as etchings, the suite also includes drypoint, aquatint and engraving. Identifying the exact composition and state matters: related titles and recurring subjects can refer to different works.
Selected Works from the Vollard Suite
These five examples represent part of the 100-work suite. We also review other compositions from the series, whether you own one sheet or a larger collection.

Vollard Suite Editions and Signatures
| Edition or feature | What to check |
|---|---|
| Standard edition of 260 | Montval laid paper in the smaller sheet format. Record the full sheet dimensions and any visible watermark. |
| Larger-paper edition of 50 | Wider margins and larger sheets. A large frame or mount opening does not establish this edition. |
| Signed and unsigned impressions | Both occur. A handwritten signature requires separate examination; an unsigned sheet is not automatically a reproduction. |
| Proofs, states and special impressions | Match the specific state and paper to the relevant catalogue entry and supporting records. |
A signature or date within the etched image can be part of the printing plate. It should not be confused with a separately applied pencil signature. Likewise, a handwritten fraction alone cannot establish the edition or authenticity.
Paper, dimensions and production
Roger Lacourière printed the edition for Ambroise Vollard in 1939. The principal editions use Montval laid paper, often with Picasso or Vollard watermarks. Smaller sheets measure roughly 34 × 44.5 cm; larger sheets roughly 38.5 × 50 cm. Orientation, individual measurements and plate sizes vary.
Identify the composition with Bloch and Baer references
The suite’s Bloch references run from 134 to 233. Baer entries help distinguish techniques and states. A suite plate number used in a book or exhibition is a catalogue identifier, not your impression’s edition number. If you do not know the title, send a clear photograph of the whole image.
Later reproductions can repeat the same composition, signature and date. Paper, printing characteristics, dimensions and documentation must be considered together. Read our Picasso identification guide for more information.
How Much Is My Picasso Vollard Suite Artwork Worth?
Value depends on the exact composition, impression, signature, paper format, condition and provenance. A complete suite also requires a sheet-by-sheet review. Visit our Picasso value guide or send photographs for an individual evaluation.
How to Sell Picasso Vollard Suite Prints
- Send photographs. Include the front, accessible reverse, signature, margins and labels. Add dimensions and any invoices or previous catalogue descriptions.
- Receive a gallery review. We research the composition, edition and available records, then explain whether further examination is needed.
- Discuss a potential purchase. If the work fits our current acquisitions, we can discuss an offer and the practical next steps.
For a group or complete suite, send an overview and any inventory first. You do not need to photograph all 100 sheets before making an initial inquiry. Leave framed works in place for the first photographs.
Picasso Vollard Suite FAQs
Can I sell a single Vollard Suite etching?
Yes. We review individual compositions as well as groups and complete suites. Send photographs even if you do not know the title or catalogue reference.
Are all original Vollard Suite impressions hand-signed?
No. Genuine unsigned impressions exist. Signature status is one part of the review, alongside the paper, printing, state and provenance.
Why does my work show an earlier date than 1939?
Picasso created the plates between 1930 and 1937; the edition was printed in 1939. A date in the image can refer to the plate’s creation rather than the printing of that sheet.
What makes a Vollard Suite complete?
A complete suite contains all 100 distinct compositions. We check the individual sheets, edition characteristics and documentation; a portfolio cover or group of related subjects does not establish completeness.
