Send Photos of Your Picasso Etching
You can begin without a title or catalogue number. Send the complete image, visible margins and close-ups of its markings. Available invoices, labels and collection records can help us connect the physical artwork with its documented edition.
Examples of Pablo Picasso Etchings
Picasso explored classical figures, musicians and the artist’s studio through etching. These examples include two Vollard Suite compositions and a later work; each sheet requires its own edition and signature checks.

Etching, Drypoint and Aquatint
Picasso often combined several intaglio processes within one composition. Identifying the technique helps distinguish the documented artwork from a reproduction and explains why descriptions may name more than one process.
| Technique | How the image is made |
|---|---|
| Etching | Acid bites exposed lines into a prepared metal plate; the recessed lines hold ink. |
| Drypoint | A sharp tool scratches directly into the plate, producing lines and a burr that can hold ink. |
| Aquatint | A granular resist and acid create textured areas that hold ink and produce tone. |
The Vollard Suite brings together 100 works made between 1930 and 1937, including etchings and combinations of intaglio techniques. Picasso’s later Suite 347, created in 1968, explores performers, artists, models and spectators. A suite title identifies the group; the individual composition and state still matter.
Bloch, Geiser-Baer and Edition Identification
Catalogue references by Georges Bloch and Bernhard Geiser and Brigitte Baer help identify Picasso’s graphic works. Detailed entries can distinguish states, papers and publication histories. For example, Deux Femmes Regardant une Tête Sculptée is recorded as Bloch 150; Baer 302.
A state records changes made to the plate. An edition describes a particular issued group of impressions. A date etched into the image may record the plate’s creation, while printing and publication occurred later. These details should be checked separately.
Paper, dimensions and production details
Paper and dimensions vary by work and issue. The two Vollard examples above are documented on Montval laid paper. Record sheet and image measurements separately, along with accessible watermarks and workshop marks. Compare them with the relevant edition; a framed opening does not reveal the full sheet size.
Hand signatures, plate signatures and stamps
A signature applied by hand, a signature printed from the plate and an estate-applied signature stamp document different arrangements. Numbering and signing vary by issue. The published edition of Peintre et Femme Cueillant des Fleurs, for example, is documented with an ink signature stamp. It should not be described as hand-signed.
A familiar image or signature alone does not authenticate a sheet. An engraving made by another artist after a Picasso painting also requires separate attribution, even when Picasso approved or signed it. Read our Picasso identification guide.

Common Questions About Selling Picasso Etchings
Can I sell one etching from a suite?
Yes. We consider individual compositions as well as groups and complete portfolios. You do not need the full Vollard Suite or another complete set to submit an inquiry.
Does a plate mark prove an etching is original?
No. A plate impression can support examination, but cannot establish authorship or edition by itself. The image, technique, paper, measurements, inscriptions and documentation need to correspond.
Should I clean or restore it before selling?
Send photographs of its present condition before arranging treatment. Avoid cleaning, bleaching, trimming or removing mounting materials yourself. Disclose any known repairs or restoration.
Do I need a certificate or complete ownership records?
You can begin without them. Send the information you have. Any certificate should identify its issuer and the specific artwork; photographs can support initial research when records are incomplete.
